Three Concessions on Cliche

All cliches are idiomatic but not all idiomatic statements are cliches.

Idiomatic statements become cliches through overuse, and therefore only if they are exceptionally attractive or otherwise useful.

Cliche is relative: neophytes by definition cannot detect it. Contemporary art music has many more neophytes than initiates.
